Sidewalk Chalk

Sidewalk Chalk Activity

Symbolism:
Throughout this activity, we had to brainstorm different ideas to incorporate into our design. We first started out doing our personal symbols. I did an ant that represented a man of great work and wisdom. The rest of my team members drew fluer de lis to represent how much of an impact religion has had, ballet shoes to represent the love of dance, and an elephant to represent great strength. To mash all of these symbols together we thought of activities we all enjoyed. The one we finally agreed on was traveling. We decided to draw an Earth and make our symbols look like the different countries. The colors didn't represent anything other than the blue ocean, but we drew our symbols with the colors that we enjoyed the most.
Working hard to draw our symbols!

Brainstorming/Sketching:
When introduced to this project, everyone didn't feel to comfortable because they were going to be put with people other than their best friends. Since Olathe Northwest isn't the high school my middle school fed into, it was a good opportunity to meet new people. At first it was kind of awkward with everyone sitting at their chairs, but we got used to each other pretty quickly. Our teachers handed out a single sheet of paper with all sorts of symbols that you could imagine. I searched through it, and decided that the ant best represented me. We all admitted that we weren't the best of drawers so we used our cellphones to aide us. I just found an ant that looked fairly easy to draw and was proud for my first sketch in my E-Communication career.
Our Finished Product!

Team Aspects:
We all learned a lot throughout this activity. Without good communication skills it would have been almost impossible to complete this task. But, with our collaborative personalities, we are team focused, generous, curious, appreciative, listens to understand, answer the bigger questions, expect trust, build relationships, and are built on mutual respect. These traits allowed us to overall improve our design, time management, and teamwork all together. The next time I do an activity like this, I will take charge and help come up with the designs more. Being a leader is seem as more powerful than just listening. Overall, this was a good way to introduce the types of projects we will be doing in each of the classes and can't wait to see what's next!
